A perfect tour to get to know the beauties of the Balkan region. Thanks to the wide variety of the zone, this private tour lets you enjoy lakes, caves, and the sea and visit capital cities Ljubljana, Zagreb and Sarajevo.
Arrive at Ljubljana or a nearby airport. Transfer to the city centre. Enjoy a guided tour around the capital city. The guided tour will take you to the old baroque town, Prešeren Square, Congress Square, the City Hall, the Cathedral, the Butchers’ Bridge, the Dragon Bridge, and the open market, very popular with the locals. Access the castle most easily by the 70m-long funicular that leaves from Old Town not far from the market, and you will be rewarded by excellent views of the city and the mountains, and you can actually see 1/3 of the country if the weather is nice. After that, you will have some free time exploring many hidden corners of the old town, seeing the well-preserved Roman walls, having a drink in one of the many bars and restaurants in the old city, or just relaxing along the lively banks of the Ljubljanica. This river gave its name to the city. Overnight in Ljubljana.
After breakfast, drive to Postojna and visit the famous karst cave, one of the largest in the world, among Slovenia’s most popular attractions. Its stalagmite and stalactite formations are unequalled anywhere. There are more than ten thousand caves in the Slovenian Karst landscape. People say that Dante found his inspiration for the Purgatory in his Divine Comedy right here in the Slovenian Karst. Postojna Cave can boast more than 35 million visitors, which is outstanding for a country as small as Slovenia. An electric train will take you into the caves and then enjoy in the underground karst world, where nature was the leading architect through the millennia and has formed unique formations. After the caves, continue to the north of the country and visit a beautiful glacial lake at the foot of the Julian Alps. Bled is Slovenia’s most popular tourist resort. Take a ride around the lake and enjoy the photo opportunities of this picturesque Slovenian treasure with its emerald-green lake, picture-postcard church on an islet and a medieval castle clinging to a rocky 139 m high cliff. Next, take the ‘pletna’ boat to the only real Slovenian island in the middle of the lake and ring the wishing bell in the 15th-century belfry of the church to ask a special favour and don’t forget to try the typical and sinfully good cream cake ‘kremsnita’. You will also visit the Bled castle, one of the oldest ones in Slovenia, with a beautiful view of the lake and the Julian Alps. Leaving Bled, drive to Ljubljana. Dinner and overnight in a hotel in the centre of Ljubljana.
After breakfast, we continue this Balkan private tour to the Plitvice National Park, wonderful nature protected by UNESCO. The lakes in the park belong to the Karst world and have unique hydrological and geomorphologic characteristics. Walk among the waterfalls, take a boat ride through the crystal water and take some magnificent photos. After the tour, drive to Zadar, where you will overnight. Zadar is a vibrant historic old town of Roman ruins, medieval churches, and cosmopolitan cafes, so we recommend a walk through the city’s lively streets.
After breakfast, head to Split, where a local guide will take you through the charming Dalmatian city and its Roman treasures. Explore the fortress-like Diocletian’s Palace at the centre of the town. Learn about the area’s fascinating history as we see Jupiter’s Temple, the Peristyle, the Cathedral and other Renaissance and Gothic buildings. Finally, enjoy some free time for a walk through the narrow cobbled streets, which add to the charm of this Mediterranean city. Overnight in Split.
After breakfast, drive to Dubrovnik where a local guide will show you around this world-famous Dalmatian city, also called the Pearl of Adriatic; it has a rich and exciting history, which is seen on every step: city gates, forts, city walls with a coat of arms of the patron Saint Blasius, military warehouse… all remind us of the turbulent periods of the city with its marble streets, baroque buildings and the ancient city walls that have protected the sophisticated republic and city for centuries. Then enjoy some free time in the lively streets of Dubrovnik. Overnight in Dubrovnik or vicinity.
After breakfast, a drive to Mostar, with a stop in Pocitelj, the stepped Ottoman-era fortress village, a picture-perfect reminder of the old Ottoman times, primarily 16th century. The most iconic building is the climbable octagonal Gavrakapetan Tower and the uppermost rampart bastions. Continue to Medjugorje. The legend says that in 1981 the Virgin Mary appeared to six children on a hillside in Medjugorje, and since then, the small village has become one of the most important European pilgrimage sites. Medjugorje is actually a Slavic word meaning a place between the mountains. After the visit, drive to Mostar. Overnight in Mostar.
After breakfast, get to know the picturesque Mostar, which refers to the famous Bridge over the Neretva River (most=bridge). During your tour of this UNESCO World Heritage-listed city, you’ll see its historic Old Bridge, the colourful Old Bazaar with traditional handicrafts and well-preserved traditional Turkish houses. Shop for handmade local crafts or enjoy lunch during your free time. After visiting Mostar, drive to the Bosnian capital and the charismatic Sarajevo. Despite that, the city still retains its traditional habits – in everyday life and food. Sarajevo became (in)famous in 1914 when a young Serb Gavrilo Princip assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand. This was the excuse for the Austro-Hungarian Empire to start a war against Serbia, which then grew into the First World War. Overnight in Sarajevo.
In the morning, we join the guided tour of Sarajevo: spot where the Sarajevo Assassination took place, Gazi Husrev Bey’s Bezistan, Tašlihan, Jewish Museum, Ferhad Paša’s Mosque, Cathedral of Jesus’ Sacred Heart, Sarajevo “Roses”, Old Orthodox Church. Besides this, you will also see some other interesting places related to the various historical events. Later you can enjoy some free time in the famous oriental old town ‘Baščaršija’ and try some local food or shop for colourful handicrafts. Overnight in Sarajevo.
After breakfast, we head for Travnik, once the capital of the Ottoman vizier, from 1686th to 1850th. We do a short break there and then continue to Jajce, a ‘birth place’ of former Yugoslavia. There we will visit the museum that presents this vital session in 1943. Then we have some free time to walk around to see the scenic waterfalls and fortress. Then we drive to Banja Luka, the second largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It represents the cultural, economic and administrative center of the Republika Srpska entity. After the short visit, we continue to Zagreb, the capital city of Croatia. Overnight in Zagreb.
After breakfast enjoy a guided tour of Croatia’s capital, which will reveal its most important cultural and architectural attractions: the Cathedral, the main Ban Jelačič square, the open market, the lively Tkalčič street… and after that enjoy some free time to explore the city further and sample some local food.
