Serbia, situated in the west-central Balkans, was part of Yugoslavia for most of the 20th century. The capital of Serbia is Belgrade (Beograd), a cosmopolitan city located at the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers. Stari Grad, Belgrade’s old town, is dominated by an ancient fortress known as the Kalemegdan and features well-preserved examples of medieval architecture, along with some of Eastern Europe’s most renowned restaurants. Novi Sad, Serbia’s second city, is upstream on the Danube and serves as a cultural and educational center, bearing similarities to the university towns in neighboring Hungary in many aspects.
